National Book Awards ...Irrelevant? →
I was just venting to a friend about my frustration with awards books being largely insular and full of literary gimmicks that don’t necessarily translated into good or even greatliterature. Here are some interesting speculations on what all parties look for from literary awards and how all are largely unsatisfied.

Jen Devourering Books: When (Not So) Good Pitches... →
jendevoureringbooks: Okay, for a little bit of context, my review policy states that I do not accept either self-published works or fantasy/science fiction (I read a little Scalzi and Mieville, but that’s about it as far as the scifi/fantasy thing goes for me). Except the wrongness didn’t stop there! Not only… This is why I say straight up in my review policy that it could be months and...

Library emptied in bid to fight closure  →
This is certainly an interesting approach. bookishquotes: Yay for fighting to keep libraries! teachingliteracy:  A town has emptied its library in a bid to fight plans to close it down. People in Stony Stratford, near Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, have spent the week withdrawing their maximum allowance of books in protest against council plans to close it as part of budget cuts. And...

whatsoldisnew: In addition to What’s Old is New, Nicole and I have about a million projects together. One thing we are doing this year is challenging each other to read certain books we’ve loved and, as part of that, we’re going to do a readalong. Why I'm (Never) Going Digital
Privacy is dead…from Islands in the Net I prefer turning pages and reading physical books, and after working on a computer for most of the day, the last thing I want to do is read a screen. It’s just not as comforting or relaxing to me. Reading a book is a pleasure of the senses and well as the knowledge. And after all the latest articles about e-readers...

My Barnes & Noble is preparing for the end...
I went down today because I need to get a copy of some Sherlock Holmes short stories and they are already preparing for closing at the end of January.  Books that are already marked down are marked down an additional 40% which means that Sherlock Holmes collection is not the only thing I walked out with. In addition to The Complete Sherlock Holmes Vol. 1, by Arthur Conan Doyle, I bought: The...

I think I have
major issues with books that concentrate on ideas and just skip over the details.  It really bugs me.  And yet I am finding The Prince of Mist to be oddly engrossing, but I am sometimes annoyed. And the brother spying on the sister…a little creepy.

Can Hardly Stand It - Doors Open, Ian Rankin
I am reading Doors Open by Ian Rankin and I really want to flip to the back of the book and just see what happens.  Who can walk away from this and who is going to go down. I am not sure that I have it in me to take the tension right now.  I just stopped myself once from peeking. I know that Mike and crew trying to steal the paintings is wrong.  I was wondering how Rankin would handle the good...

Can't Take A Trip WIthout Getting More Books
I don’t know why I can’t travel without buying anything but it is true and quite insane.  I went to the Baltimore Book Festival just knowing that I wasn’t going to buy any books or get any books because I already have too many books.  I had brought three books along with me to read and that was enough, right?  Wrong! I came back with quite a few books. Support group anyone? At...

WatchWatch
I am really excited that I have been hearing such good things about this movie because the trailer looks really good.  I love this version of the song Creep, by Radiohead.  I have always been a little on the fence about Facebook, so we wil see if my account survives this movie.  The tag line for this is the best one that I have seen.  So memorable.
